GIANMARIA TESTA’S NEW ALBUM

After “Altre Latitudini” (2003), Gianmaria Testa has released his new album, “Da questa parte del mare”, a turning point in his artistic production, in October 2006.

It is a “concept album”, wholly focussed on a single topic. Thus, the album has been thought of as a novel and the songs are its chapters. All of them together tell a story.

When listening to Testa’s songs for the second time, it becomes clear to what extent his music has always followed the same thread. A delicate thread that has been held onto ever since that day of celebration and childhood when he discovered the power of suggestion of simple song. Music that roams the subterranean shocks, the sometimes veiled confusion which, without warning and everlastingly, can give rise to that agonizing happiness, that indescribable fervour of feeling alive, penetrated, affected by the world, and that disturbing desire to be able to and to know how to describe it.
Testa’s lyrics aim to translate as closely as possible the very slightest flicker of life, the merest feeling of vertigo.
Their thrifty poetry excels in recreating all the nuances of the “intermediary feelings”: it puts them in a new and frail light, a small and very personal flame, without necessarily completely exposing them to the harsh light of day.
Sensitivity and musicality make a harmonious pair, splendidly well-balanced. The music is never deformed and in the middle distance, never a mere porter condemned to carry the emotion; it is there to coat it, fill it, give it form, The delicately rasping tone of the voice, the gracefulness of the arrangements, the natural subtlety of the melodies and the infinite warmth of the acoustic instrumentation all make Extra – muros an album strikingly true to life. Or, or to be more exact, caressingly, breathtakingly, brilliantly true to life. In Italian railway stations, “connections” is given the delightful term “coincidenza”. And just like a series of coincidenza, Testa’s songs have a precious quality that is so slight and unassuming it could almost be considered fortuitous: they restore the often forgotten or neglected connections between feelings and notes, an underground network between man and the world.
